Academic Resources

SAP

UPES is the first University in the country to have successfully implemented the SAP solution for Higher Education and Research (HE&R). The solution addresses the Finance, Materials, Human Capital and Academic Administration functions. The implementation has become a global success story and has been adopted as a accelerated deployment model by SAP Germany.

Learning Resource Center
A well equipped library is the backbone of any university. Constructed in a total area of more than 5000 sq feet, the main library has a seating capacity of more than 100 students and contains over 15000 volumes of publications including books, standards, reports, proceeding and National and International Journals in the field of Petroleum Exploration, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology and Management etc. Moreover the library subscribes to over 100 Journals and Magazines on engineering and management related subjects and is currently in talks with some renowned Indian and foreign universities for acquiring membership of their libraries. In fact, as part international cooperation and collaboration efforts, IFP (France) donated 138 books on Petroleum Engineering to the University.

Advanced Computing Center
Overview
The University colleges have computing facilities that serve the University as a whole (including regional campuses) as well as facilities whose primary function is to support activities on the campus. These facilities include central systems, microcomputers, and workstations. Some of these facilities are dedicated to a particular College's use, and some are available to all students and faculty.

In addition to PCs and workstations located in computer labs on campus, and laptop computers provided to PG Management students, the University also provides access to "host" computer systems. These are large, central computers that serve many people at once. Such central systems provide on-line access to a variety of information, including a SAP ERP system specifically designed for Higher Education and Research.

Central systems provide internet access, including mail and messaging (to others within the University and around the world) for all employees. Other central systems supports instruction by operating discussion forums and a central knowledge repository for any course whose instructor requests that service.

Central systems also provide access to a variety of software, including centralized user profile and file storage, centralized print management, access to integrated development environments and compilers for programming languages, computer aided design software and statistical analysis systems. The several central computer systems have a need-to-use basis for authorizing their use. For example, everyone is authorized to use the World Wide Web.

Computer Centre
The computer centre is equipped with 32 bit and 64bit dual processor Xeon & Opteron Servers These run central network functions such as authentication, mail services, database services, terminal services etc.). These servers cater to a total of about 1500 nodes – of which 225 are in the Computer Centre labs across campuses. All machines have internet access over high speed leased lines at 2MBps. The primary operating environment is Window Server 2003, Linux and Solaris 10.

The Computer Centre has Sun Rays available to students on which they can use Windows as well as Solaris and Linux applications. Access to this system is through Smart cards. The network backbone is Gigabit switched. End Client access is provided through a mix of wired and wireless (Wi-fi 802.11g) technologies. Any student having their own laptop can be made part of the wireless network and have internet access from anywhere on campus.

Ancillary services and access to peripherals like CD/DVD burners, Scanners, photo quality printers and high speed laser printers is available to students through the computer centre. Centralized online backups are also maintained for the campus here. These centres also provide anti-virus protection at the server, client and gateway levels for the respective campuses. All the classrooms are equipped with ceiling mounted LCD/DLP projectors, Computers and PA system with wireless microphones.

The University has Academic alliances with Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Ltd. through which the entire portfolio of applications and platforms from both these software giants is available for use by students and faculty. Applications range from basic operating systems to high end clustering solutions and grid computing. Additionally, specialized software is available to students like the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Enterprise Security Suite, ORACLE 10g Rel 2 for Database management, AutoCAD, Solidworks, and CATIA for Engineering Graphics, Systat for statistical analysis, and specialized domain specific software from Aspentech and Schlumberger are also available for use.

Services
The computer centre has systems administrators on duty during the hours that the lab is open. Advice services include helping to resolve problems in using computer hardware and software, and extend to tutoring in the academic subject at hand or conducting practical sessions. The administrators are provided with reference manuals for the software in use and work with the user to identify the problem and discover its solution.

In addition to regular administrators, student assistants may also be hired to assist with the lab. These student assistants are typically hired in their first or second year at the University and continue until they graduate, so average experience levels are quite good.

Non-credit seminars and other forms of instruction are offered to users free of charge regularly. Topics vary according to need, and include introductions to using the Internet, Microsoft Office, Internet Access and E-Mail system use, Web Page authoring, effective utilization of available infrastructure and any other requested topics.

The University is continually upgrading and enhancing these facilities.
